Office Cubicles Have A Bad Rep
Office cubicles have a bad repThis is not your ordinary career site. I help the corporate worker who toils away in the company cubicle make career transitions. You want to do your job well, following all the rules -- .The career transitions where I can help you center on three critical career areas: How to land a job, succeed in a job, and build employment security.Top 10 Posts on CategoriesMy experience in the workforce has been short, letâs face it, Iâve only been out of college a few years and really canât give advice from decades of experience. I have, however, been working for quite some time, starting with my first job in high school working as a cashier in my hometownâs CVS to waitressing at a local pub and then various internships throughout college and not to mention the full-time job I hold now.I started interning at a start-up company almost two years ago. After coming home from a teaching abroad experience that wasnât a great fit for me and deciding I didnâ t want to jump into a full-time job doing something I didnât love, I reached out to some friends and landed myself an internship in the Washington, DC area. For the first time in my life I felt respected, engaged and important at my internship. I had had the experience in the past (during my college years) where Iâd be sent out on a Starbucks run to get 20 different lattes, frappuccinos and espressos only to spill half of them in my car on the way back or forget someoneâs order and have to turn around and go back. This internship in DC was different, I didnât get coffee for anyone, people knew my name and I sat in what they called a âcoolicle,â â" you read that right, the company I worked for actually embraced the fact that we had a cubicle and called it a coolicle!Cubicles have a bad rep, people associate them with boring sales jobs, boring accounting jobs or boring journalism jobs â" notice I added boring before each? But what if I just said âsales, accou nting and journalism,â that doesnât sound so bad, so why add the negative connotation that a cubicle brings? A cubicle really just gives you some of your own space to get your work done, itâs not a jail cell and thereâs no closed door that hinders you to walk next door to your colleague and do some collaborating! My thoughts on cubicles, or coolicles, whatever you may call them, is that your perception of them is completely an attitude and does not need to reflect a reality. Your cubicle is not what makes or breaks your job! What does make your job something you enjoy doing every day is the work youâre doing (do you like it?), the people you work with (are they stimulating?), and the culture of your company (does it fit you?). My advice is to go into your cubicle with excitement and do your best every day with a smile on your face and youâll forget the negative connotations. Hang up some pictures of your friends, put a funny quote up on the wall, and have a laug h! Itâs all about your mindset! If you were wondering about my awesome internship in my coolicle, it turned into a full-time job with a full-time coolicle about two months later and a year after that it turned into a move to a city I wanted to live in with more responsibilities and more desk space. I say, throw out the idea that a cubicle is a bad thing and become the Cubicle Warrior you deserve to be, three walls certainly wonât stop you! This is a guest post from Sarah Fudin. Another Facebook Privacy Breach Today
Another Facebook Privacy Breach Today Update: Special due to the parents over at Facebook. I talked with a couple of people there who seemed into the problem. Turns out that this case was actually not a privacy bug. Rather it more than likely a case of an unintentional âreply allâ and some sort of synching fluke, so that a threaded conversation that seemed like a private dialog abruptly appeared in my inbox. My apologies to the Facebook group and thank you once more for trying into it. I guess Iâve turn into somewhat paranoid given the previous privateness breaches which have happened. This May there was a bug that uncovered âpersonalâ chat messages. And Mark Zuckerberg (CEO of Facebook) has acknowledged that they have âmade a bunch of errorsâ on this entrance. Traditional e-mail has been getting this right for fairly a while now. And, I suppose this highlights what number of a long time of growth have gone into one thing that seems âsimpleâ on the floor, however ac tually is fairly complicated when you consider sustaining your inbox (privately), dealing with an incomprehensible volume of spam, scaling to billions and billions of messages, and so forth. I have noticed that increasingly more conversations that would have taken place by way of traditional e mail prior to now are actually as a substitute taking place on Facebook, Linkedin, etc. Iâm doing it too. But, with the privacy breaches that have occurred on Facebook, some believe that it is time to revisit that decision and probably sluggish that trend. There are a couple of critical failures that may drive prospects away from your product permanently. Data loss is one and might kill a product. Privacy breaches are another, especially in terms of your personal life. One slip and other people might forgive you. Multiple, ongoing slips and prospects delete their account and depart you.
